Bikini Project

Gallery 101, Ottawa

2006

looping digital projection

approx.

6' x 8'

The Bikini Project consists of 294 snapshots projected as a large-scale looping digital slide show. Log Salvor Erik Hammond retrieved a photo album containing these snapshots from Howe Sound, Canada in the summer of 2002. He retrieved the floating album and later donated this body of salvaged material to the artist. Its history, and previous collector(s) remain unknown. Water has distorted many of the images, the majority of which are comprised of bikini-clad women at the beach. Handwritten inscriptions occasionally indicate the name, date and/or location of the woman depicted, as in “Janis, Tribune Bay, Hornby Island”. The archive of consists of international shots taken over the last four decades. Selected projection stills below:

Travel Shots

Struts Gallery, 2008

looping slide projection

approx.

3' x 5'

Travel Shots consists of 140 slides projected as a looping slide show. The images were chosen by the artist from a family slide archive donated by the artist’s deceased neighbour, Brian Letvad. He wished to rid himself of the collection eight years after going blind. A large number of the slides were destroyed while outside in Mr. Letvad and the artist's communal storage-shed. Many of the images chosen by the artist range from partially to completely obliterated. The artist's choices highlights the photographer's tendancy to frame the images through the front and driver's side car windows. The slides were taken on road trips across North America, Europe and Japan throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s by the donor’s father, Jan Letvad for presentation to his family. Most photos were taken from his Datsun 280Z. Selected projection stills below:
